About the artwork:
I wanted to take inspiration from the grand coronation portrait of Queen Elizabeth I. It is a painting that is permanently ingrained in my minds eye and I think of it often. Rest assured, I am not a royalist, however there is something deeply endearing about the coronation get-up that makes me want to paint characters trapped inside fictional fantasy realms. Thus, we land on the concept of a Halloween queen- which is absolutely ludicrous and therefore I had to paint it immediately.
The October Empress is a monarch of mischief and a sovereign of spells. She rules over the hallowed month of October in the most Halloween-y way possible, which to say is not at all, for nothing can rule the month of October and she merely enjoys watching the chaos unfold.
Don’t let her melancholy face deceive you, for The October Empress is having an excellent time. She is simply suffering from RBF. In fact, to be more accurate, this brings to mind an amusing phrase of Victorian slang which I learned a while ago: ‘got the morbs,’ meaning, ‘melancholy or sadness’. Therefore I am inclined to say that our Empress is suffering from Resting Morbs Face.
